What is Drone ? UAV Drone Category

What is drone is answered here in this easy to understand article.

A drone, in a technological context, is an unmanned aircraft. Drones are more formally known as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or unmanned aircraft systems (UASes). Essentially, a drone is a flying robot. The aircrafts may be remotely controlled or can fly autonomously through software-controlled flight plans in their embedded systems working in conjunction with onboard sensors and GPS.

Drone category

  • Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), an aircraft without a human pilot aboard
  • Unmanned combat aerial vehicle, a UAV that carries aircraft ordnance
  • Agricultural drones
  • Delivery drone
  • Micro air vehicle
  • Miniature UAV
  • Multirotor
  • Quadcopter
  • Passenger drone

An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), commonly known as a drone, is an aircraft without a human pilot aboard. UAVs are a component of an unmanned aircraft system (UAS); which include a UAV, a ground-based controller, and a system of communications between the two. The flight of UAVs may operate with various degrees of autonomy: either under remote control by a human operator or autonomously by onboard computers.

Compared to manned aircraft, UAVs were originally used for missions too “dull, dirty or dangerous” for humans. While they originated mostly in military applications, their use is rapidly expanding to commercial, scientific, recreational, agricultural, and other applications,[3]such as policing, peacekeeping,[4] and surveillance, product deliveries, aerial photography, agriculture, smuggling and drone racing. Civilian UAVs now vastly outnumber military UAVs, with estimates of over a million sold by 2015, so they can be seen as an early commercial application of autonomous things, to be followed by the autonomous car and home robots.

UAV is ”Unmanned Aerial Vehicle” which are mostly used by the military and law enforcement. The UAV is a remotely piloted aircraft’s (RPA), also refereed to as Drones, that can be remotely piloted from anywhere in the world.

Drone technology is constantly evolving as new innovation and big investment are bringing more advanced drones to the market every few months.

Unmanned aerial vehicle technology covers everything from the aerodynamics of the drone, materials in the manufacture of the physical UAV, to the circuit boards, chipset and software which are the brains of the drone.

One of the most popular drones on the market is the DJI Phantom 3.  This drone was very popular with professional aerial cinematographers. While slightly old now, it uses plenty of advanced technology which is present in the very latest drones.

This UAV is ideal to explain drone technology because it has everything in one package.  It includes the UAV, gimbal and camera and uses some of the top drone technology on the market today.

In only a few months since writing this article, some new and highly advanced drones such as the DJI Mavic Air, Phantom 4 Pro, Inspire 2 and Walkera Voyager 5 have come to the market.  The fast pace of drone technological innovation is tremendous.
